Player Profile: Che-Hsuan Lin
By Dave B. | January 22nd, 2008
E-mail | Print | Share
Che-Hsuan Lin, CF (19)
6′0〃 180 lbs.
GCL - .268/.332/.470 (168 ABs) Lowell - .163/.260/.209 (43 ABs)
2007: Being his first professional season, Lin did rather well. He
started the season playing on the Gulf Coast and showed why the Red Sox
paid $400,000 for him. As you can see above, his line stats were
impressive for an 18 year old but his rate stats were even more
impressive. He managed a ground ball rate of a meager 33%, which is
insanely low. His line drive rate (19%), and walk rate (8.4) were both
respectable for a kid of his experience. The most exciting part of his
time on the Gulf Coast was his .202 ISOP. To show that kind of power with
his size and experience is something worth noting.
His numbers went south after moving to Lowell, but it is not entirely his
fault. Lin went from having an appropriate BABIP of .331 on the Gulf
Coast to an incredibly low .212 in Lowell. A player with Lin’s speed,
even with just average batting skills, will never have a BABIP that low
over the coarse of 500 ABs. I was not concerned with what happened to Lin
’s bat in Lowell, but rather his speed. During his time there he started
running less and being successful at a lower rate. Maybe this is a
byproduct of being on base less, but it is still a troubling trend.
Scouting Report: The best way to describe Lin is as a freakish athlete.
He may be one of the fastest players in the organization but also has the
potential to his 15+ home-runs one day. Those type of players don’t come
around very often. I guess this is why he was the best player coming out
of Taiwan last year. His speed should translate to 40+ stolen base
abilities. His power is slightly, as I have mentioned before, is odd for
his size. The way he generates it is his quick bat and extremely strong
wrists. The combination of those two things allows him good power.
At the plate, he still has some work to do. Like most young hitters, he
needs to work on patience and pitch selection. He is extremely fastball
reliant. Because of this, he is very susceptible to off speed pitches.
This will start to translate in a big way as he moves up to organizations
and faces better pitching talent. For a player coming from Taiwan, he has
good plate discipline but overall it needs to improve. Baseball over
there is different in many ways but one big way is the lack of emphasis
on OBP.
What makes Lin special is his secondary skills. He has a good make-up,
extremely strong arm, and great range. Everybody in the organization
raves about Lin’s dedication to baseball and improving himself. While
his arm and range is great, defense is something he is trying to improve.
He has trouble reading the ball of that bat, at times, so he is working
on improving that. If you don’t believe that is important go look at
Crisp play center and see why he is so great.
Final Analysis: Lin is another one of my guys. Maybe it is my affection
for “5-tool players” or maybe I love him because of his desire to play
in Boston, either way he is one of my guys. It is going to be a long road
for Lin to make in to the Majors. He has many things to work on and many
areas he can improve. That being said, I can definitely see him manning
center field for the Red Sox in four years. Look for him to play most of
this season at Greenville. I shocked if he gets promoted past that point
this year, but weirder things have happened.
